Yield, payout ratio, dividend growth and aristocrats — how to build a portfolio that pays you even while you sleep.
Dividend investing — overview
Dividend investing is an approach built on companies that pay a regular share of profit to shareholders. Instead of relying on price appreciation alone, you receive a tangible cash flow — the dividend — which you can spend or reinvest and let compounding work. For many investors it is a way to build a portfolio that "pays you while you sleep". The key metrics are dividend yield, payout ratio (how much of profit the company distributes) and dividend growth over time. The highest yield is not automatically the best choice. A very high yield can signal that the market expects a dividend cut or company trouble. Conversely, companies with a lower but steadily growing payout — so-called dividend aristocrats that raise the payout for many years in a row — tend to indicate financial stability. Dividend sustainability is judged by free cash flow and payout ratio: a healthy company pays from real earnings, not debt. In the Czech context taxes matter too — dividends are subject to withholding tax, and for foreign stocks double-taxation treaties play a role. This section explains how to read dividend metrics, how to assess payout sustainability and how QMA tracks companies' dividend history. This is educational content, not investment advice.
