📓Trading Journal — Turn Emotions into Data and Improve
Trading Journal — Turn Feelings into Data and Improve
“What gets measured, gets improved.” This old management adage holds doubly true in trading. Most beginner traders don't know their results — they only have a feeling. And feelings lie.
If you had to choose one tool from the entire QMA platform that would advance you the most in the long run, it's not some genius scanner or AI prediction. It's the Trading Journal. It might sound boring — but the journal is the difference between someone who trades just as poorly after a year and someone who improves month by month.
---
What the Journal is For: Black Box Analogy
A commercial airplane has a black box — a device that continuously records every flight parameter. When the flight is fine, no one looks at it. But when something goes wrong, it's the only way to find out what happened and why — and ensure it doesn't happen again.
The trading journal is your black box. It records every trade: when you entered, at what price, how many shares, why, what strategy, when and at what price you exited, and how much you gained/lost. Then it allows you to look back and find patterns. Not feelings, but facts.
★ Insight: The aviation industry is the safest mode of transport in the world precisely because after every mistake, the black box is opened, the cause is found, and procedures are adjusted. The market won't give you a black box — you have to keep it yourself.

Why Keep a Journal from Day One — Feelings vs. Data
Human memory systematically distorts trading:
- You remember wins, forget losses. You think you're better than you are.
- You rationalize mistakes. “That trade was actually good, just unlucky."
- You won't see patterns. That you mostly lose on Mondays, mainly in energy, mainly when you increase after a loss.
Thirty trades is the minimum when patterns start to make sense. If you start after a year, you'll throw away a hundred trades you could have learned from.
★ Insight: The most expensive trades aren't the losing ones. They're the ones you didn't learn from — because you'll repeat them over and over.

What the Journal in QMA Can Do
1. Trade Recording
Entry (date, time, price, number of shares including fractional), exit, P/L (money and %), strategy, reason for entry. Most beginners underestimate this last one — after a month, you'll see which reasons work and which are just excuses.2. Import from Broker — No Manual Rewriting
- XTB import with automatic detection — upload the sheet and QMA will find the lists with open and closed positions itself.
- CSV import (other brokers), manual addition, from portfolio.
★ Insight: Friction kills habits. If keeping a journal takes ten minutes of rewriting for each trade, you'll stop keeping it after a week. Automatic import decides whether you'll stick with the journal.
3. Statistics
Success rate (win rate), average gain vs. loss (R:R ratio), profit factor, expectancy (most important — see below).4. MFE/MAE Excursion
MFE (Maximum Favorable Excursion) = how far the trade went into profit before you exited. MAE (Maximum Adverse Excursion) = how far it went into loss. Reveals if you're letting profits slip away or cutting losses too late.5. Psychology and “Did I Stick to the Plan?"
Mental state (nervousness, greed, FOMO) + checkbox if you stuck to the plan, + screenshots. Shows you how much not following your own rules costs you.6. Equity Curve
Graph of cumulative result over time + live unrealized P/L on open positions.7. Strategy Attribution and Backfill Context
Assigns trade to strategy and retrospectively fills in context from the time of entry (fundamentals, technique).8. Taxes CZ
Indicative headline profit, tax now, export Excel/PDF, three-year time test.---
Expectancy — Why You Can Lose Most Trades and Still Make Money
This is the most important concept. Most beginners are obsessed with win rate. But win rate alone means nothing at all. What matters is expectancy — how much you earn on average per trade:
Expectancy = (success rate × average gain) − (failure rate × average loss)
Example A: win rate 40%, avg. gain +900 Kč, avg. loss −300 Kč.
Expectancy = (0.40 × 900) − (0.60 × 300) = 360 − 180 = +180 Kč per trade
You lose 60% of trades, yet you make money — because your winning trades are 3× larger than the losing ones.
Example B: win rate 80%, avg. gain +100 Kč, avg. loss −600 Kč.
Expectancy = (0.80 × 100) − (0.20 × 600) = 80 − 120 = −40 Kč per trade
Wins four out of five — and long-term fails. Classic trap: “can't stand" a trade being in the red, but quickly closes what's in the green.
★ Insight: Win rate is ego. Expectancy is the paycheck. The journal is the only place where you'll see your true expectancy.

How to Read MFE/MAE
MFE example: you bought at 100, the stock rose to 130 (MFE +30%), but you sold after it fell to 108 (+8%). MFE screams: you left 22 percentage points on the table. Repeatedly → you have an issue with exits.
MAE example: bought at 100, trade ended +10%, but in the meantime fell to 82 (MAE −18%). You sat in a deep loss and hoped. Maybe it worked out, but this way you risk a burned-out account.
| What You See | What It Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| High MFE, low realized gain | Exiting too early | Trailing stop / partial exits |
| High MAE on losses | Holding losses too long | Tighten stop and stick to it |
| MAE near zero on winners | Precise entries | Good timing |
★ Insight: MFE/MAE separates two different causes of poor results. You might not have a bad strategy — you might have great entries and catastrophic exits.
---
Why Record Psychology and Plan Adherence
Most losses don't stem from a bad strategy but from lack of discipline in execution. After a month, it typically shows: trades with plan adherence expectancy +200 Kč, with broken plan −400 Kč. Suddenly it's clear that the strategy works — you're just spoiling it with your own impulsiveness. And discipline can be trained.
---
How the Equity Curve Shows Trend
- Smoothly rising → the system works, keep going.
- Flat/falling → something is wrong, stop and analyze.
- Stairs up with sharp drops → profitable strategy, but occasionally one undisciplined trade pulls you down.
How Strategy Attribution Tells What Works
| Strategy | Trades | Win Rate | Expectancy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multibagger Pro | 12 | 50% | +850 Kč |
| Seasonality TOP 5 | 18 | 61% | +420 Kč |
| Swing Breakouts | 25 | 36% | −90 Kč |

Practical Procedure
- Record every trade immediately (or import) — with entry reasoning and mental state.
- Quick weekly review (5 min) — did I trade without a plan?
- Monthly in-depth analysis — statistics, expectancy by strategies, MFE/MAE, plan adhered vs. not.
- Find one pattern and adjust one rule — don't change everything at once.
- Measure the effect next month — the journal becomes a laboratory.
★ Insight: Improvement isn't about finding the “holy grail." It's about a series of small, measurable adjustments — one mistake corrected per month. Twelve corrected mistakes in a year.
---
5 Tips
- Always write the reason for entry. If you have nothing to write, maybe you shouldn't be in the trade at all.
- Be brutally honest with yourself about “did I stick to the plan."
- Focus on expectancy, not win rate.
- Take screenshots of the chart at entry and exit.
- Import, don't rewrite.
How to Connect the Journal with the Rest of QMA
- Portfolio → Journal (auto-journal). The trade is automatically pulled with context.
- Journal → Strategy. Strategy attribution tells you which strategies are actually making you money on your account — the most valuable feedback.
- Journal → Taxes. Complete records for filing at the end of the year.
---
Common Mistakes
- Not keeping a journal at all. “I remember it" is an illusion.
- Lying to yourself in it. The journal is useless without truthful data.
- Recording only wins. You learn more from losses.
- Obsession with win rate.
- Collecting data and never reading it.
- Changing everything at once.
Summary
The trading journal is your black box — an unbiased record of what's really happening in your account. It turns vague feelings into hard data, shows you your true expectancy, reveals through MFE/MAE whether you're messing up entries or exits, highlights the cost of indiscipline, and tells you which strategies are actually making you money. Keep it from day one, import instead of rewriting, analyze thoroughly once a month, and change only one rule at a time.
