Dashboard — Read the Market Sentiment Before You Buy

Imagine a fighter pilot who jumps into a plane and takes off immediately without checking the dashboard. They don't know the altitude, speed, weather, or fuel level. How long will they last? This is exactly what most novice traders do: they open a screener, find an "interesting" stock, and buy it — without any idea of the environment they're operating in.

The Dashboard in QMA is your cockpit. It's the first screen you should open every morning. In 60 seconds, it tells you three key things: what phase the market is in, what its sentiment is, and where the strength is flowing. Only with this knowledge does it make sense to look for specific stocks.

---

Why Read the Context Before Picking Stocks

There is an old truth: a large part of an individual stock's movement is not about the stock itself, but about the market as a whole. When the entire market rises, average stocks rise too. When it falls, it drags down even quality companies. This "tide that lifts all boats" is called beta — the movement you get just by being in the market. In contrast, alpha is the extra return you earn through good selection.

★ Insight: First the tide, then the boat. In a strong bull market, even an average stock selection will profit, while in a bear market, even an above-average selection will lose. That's why an experienced trader first finds out which way the tide is flowing, and only then looks for a specific boat. The Dashboard shows you the tide. The Screener and Strategy help you with the boat.

1) Market Strip — The Market Pulse at a Glance

  • SPY — S&P 500 ETF (500 largest companies). "The market" in the broadest sense.
  • QQQ — Nasdaq 100, mainly technology and growth.
  • DIA — Dow Jones, 30 established companies (more defensive).
  • VIX — "fear index". Low (below ~15) = calm, high (above ~25–30) = nervousness.
  • DXY — dollar index. A strong dollar often pressures stocks.
  • 10-year bond — when yields rise quickly, growth stocks are under pressure.
★ Insight: Risk-on vs risk-off. SPY/QQQ rising, VIX falling, dollar stable = risk-on. VIX jumping, dollar strengthening, yields jumping = risk-off (flight to safety).

---

2) Market Phase (Regime Badge) — The Most Important Number

QMA calculates the phase from SPY's behavior relative to moving averages (SMA 50 and 200) combined with volatility:

PhaseHow it formsWhat it means
🟢 BULLPrice above SMA 50 and 200, low volatilityMarket rising, tide carries you
🟡 SIDEWAYSPrice hovering around averagesMarket without direction
🔴 BEARPrice below SMA 50 and 200Market falling, tide against you
🟠 VOLATILEHigh volatilityChaos, high risk
★ Insight: Market phase is the game's difficulty setting. BULL is "easy mode" — the market often forgives mistakes. BEAR and VOLATILE are "hard mode". You can't change the phase, but you can adapt how you play.
PhaseGeneral tendency (descriptive, not directive)
🟢 BULLHigher exposure, momentum and growth tend to prevail
🟡 SIDEWAYSPatience, selection more important, smaller positions
🔴 BEARDefensive approach, quality and cash
🟠 VOLATILEHighest caution, smaller positions, wait for calm
Market phase is not a buy/sell directive. It's context. Specific decisions remain up to you.

3) QMA Fear & Greed Index — Contrarian Compass

A number from 0–100 measuring market emotions: 0–25 Extreme Fear · 25–45 Fear · 45–55 Neutral · 55–75 Greed · 75–100 Extreme Greed.

QMA index is calculated from 7 components: VIX, market breadth, dark pool, insider, news, institutions, momentum.

★ Insight: "Be greedy when others are fearful." Buffett's quote sums up contrarian thinking. Extreme fear in the crowd statistically tends (not certainly!) to precede periods when it was cheap. Extreme greed often accompanies peaks.

Note: Fear & Greed is not a day-timing tool. Extreme fear can last weeks and the market can continue to fall ("don't catch a falling knife"). Use as one layer of context, combine with market phase.

---

4) Sector Strength — Where the Money Flows

The market = 11 sectors and money rotates between them. The widget is a heatmap: green = relative strength, red = weakness (measured by relative strength against the market).

★ Insight: Sector rotation as a traffic light. Energy and finance in green, technology in red → money rotates from growth to value/cyclical stocks. It's not a prediction, but a strong indication of where it makes sense to look.

You want to swim with the current. A stock from a red sector goes against the rotation — you need an exceptionally strong reason.

---

5) Earnings Calendar — Avoid Surprises

Shows which companies will release results in the coming days, + beat rate (how often the company exceeded estimates). Earnings day is the riskiest day in a stock's life — the price can jump/fall by 10–20% in minutes. Entering just before earnings is speculation on the release, not an investment in the company.

---

6) 5-Pillar Market Overview and Portfolio Alerts

5-Pillar Overview shows the average market score across five pillars — a thermometer of overall health. Portfolio Alerts are personalized notifications for your positions (approaching stop alert, upcoming results, risk signal).

★ Insight: Stop alert ≠ automatic sale. Alerts in QMA are notifications, not commands. The platform does not automatically sell anything for you.

Morning Ritual: 5 Steps in 5 Minutes

StepWhat you doQuestion
1. PhaseRegime badge"What environment am I playing in today?"
2. SentimentFear & Greed + market strip"Is fear or greed prevailing?"
3. SectorsSector heatmap"Where is the strength flowing and where not?"
4. CalendarEarnings + portfolio alerts"Am I at risk of surprises today?"
5. Only now searchScreener/Strategy"Which stock fits this context?"
★ Insight: Order makes a difference. A beginner starts with step 5 (looking for stocks) and ignores context. A professional starts with step 1. The same stock can be a good opportunity in a BULL phase and a bad idea in a BEAR phase.

---

How to Connect the Dashboard with the Rest of QMA

Dashboard → Screener: from the heatmap, you know strong sectors → filter stocks by sector.
Dashboard → Strategy: from the Regime badge, you know the phase → choose a strategy that fits the phase.
Dashboard → Portfolio: alerts guide you to positions that need attention.

★ Insight: Three layers of decision-making. 1. Context (Dashboard) — what is the environment? 2. Filter (Screener) — where to look? 3. Plan (Strategy + Portfolio) — how to proceed? If you skip the first, you're building a house without foundations.

---

Common Mistakes

❌ Ignoring market phase — buying aggressive growth in BEAR/VOLATILE is rowing against the current.
❌ Taking Fear & Greed as a trigger — extreme fear doesn't mean "buy right now".
❌ Buying against sector rotation — a stock from a weakening sector faces a headwind.
❌ Entering just before earnings — random earnings movement can wipe out your analysis.
❌ Jumping straight into the Screener — looking for stocks without context is like choosing clothes without knowing the weather outside.

---

Summary

The Dashboard is your command center and morning warm-up. Its job is not to pick a stock for you — other tabs do that. Its job is to give you context. Remember three key widgets: Regime badge (market phase), Fear & Greed (crowd sentiment), Sector Strength (where the flow is). And one rule: read the market sentiment before you buy.
