Smart Consensus Tracker — Analysts as a Layer, Not a Command

Open a stock on a financial portal and you'll see: a green "Strong Buy" label, a target price 40% higher, the feeling that professionals have given you a tip. The problem is that most retail investors read analyst data incorrectly — they take it as a command, not as one opinion among many. The Smart Consensus Tracker tab (/analyst-leaderboard) presents analyst data as a layer for understanding, not as "buy this."

---

Who Are Analysts and What Is Consensus Rating

A sell-side analyst is an employee of a bank (Goldman, Morgan Stanley…) who follows a handful of companies in one sector and issues a rating (Strong Buy → Buy → Hold → Sell → Strong Sell) and a price target (where the stock will go in ~12 months).

An individual is often wrong, so consensus is monitored — an aggregate of all analysts. The analyst_consensus table in QMA holds aggregates for 12,421 symbols.

★ Insight: Consensus smooths out individual errors — but also correct minority opinions. When one skeptic is right against twenty optimists, consensus drowns him out. That's why deviations from consensus (contrarian) are often more interesting.

---

Target Price and Upside %

Upside % = (target price − current price) / current price × 100

Stock at $100, target $130 → upside +30%. Sounds like the holy grail — find the biggest upside and buy. Here's where the trap lies.

---

Why NOT to Be a Slave to Analysts

WeaknessWhat It Means
Bullish BiasThe vast majority of ratings are Buy/Hold; "Sell" is rare. Banks don't want to upset companies.
LaggingDowngrade only when the stock has fallen, upgrade only when it has risen. A mirror of the past.
Target Prices Miss12-month targets have poor accuracy — more direction/enthusiasm than reliable prediction.
Conflict of InterestA bank with an IPO/M&A relationship with a company has motivation to maintain a positive rating.
★ Insight: The most valuable is not the absolute rating, but its CHANGE. An upgrade from Hold to Buy carries more signal than a stock hanging on "Buy" for five years. Change = something has shifted in the model.

---

The Trap of "Big Upside"

High upside is often not an opportunity, but a warning. Analysts update target prices slowly, prices move every second. When a stock falls: price $100 → $70 → $50, target remains at $130 → upside grows from +30% to +160%. Not because the stock is great, but because the price is falling faster than analysts can lower targets. Jumping in just because of "+160% upside" = catching a falling knife.

★ Insight: Big upside + rising/stable price = potentially undervalued stock. Big upside + falling price = trap. The number alone does not distinguish these two opposite worlds.

Four Baskets

BasketWhat It MeansHow to Read
Conviction BuyStrong unified buy consensusQuality starting list — but conviction is already priced in
Big UpsideLarge % space to targetMost dangerous — verify undervaluation vs falling knife
ContrarianDiscrepancy (weaker consensus but strong other signals)Hunt for opportunities where the crowd may be wrong — most own work
Institutional DarlingsInstitutional favoritesIntersection of analyst layer with smart money
No basket is "buy this" — they are filtered starting lists based on theses.

---

Connection: Analyst → ATS Pillar → Screener

Consensus and target prices feed the ATS sub-score (part of the super-pillar SENTIMENT, 50% NSS + 50% ATS). A stock with strong ATS but weak VALUE and SMART_MONEY = warning (analyst enthusiasm without fundamental support). From basket → Screener → 5 pillars.

★ Insight: The strongest setups arise when layers agree independently: analysts upgrade, smart money accumulates, momentum turns, fundamentals hold. When a single layer screams "buy" (typically upside), it's a reason for skepticism.

---

Practical Procedure

  1. Start with a thesis, not a basket.
  2. Select 3–5 names from the basket.
  3. Verify the price chart and momentum — separates undervaluation from a falling knife.
  4. Transfer to Screener — do the 5 pillars agree?
  5. Look for CHANGE, not state (fresh upgrade > old label).
  6. Decide for yourself.
---

Tips

  1. Follow revisions, not ratings.
  2. Target price = range, not point.
  3. Contrarian with support, not out of defiance.
  4. Consensus of 30 analysts ≠ consensus of 2 (broad coverage is more robust).
---

Common Mistakes

Blindly buying based on rating · believing the target price as certainty · chasing the highest upside · reading a static label instead of change · relying on one layer.

---

Summary

Smart Consensus Tracker provides a processed view of what Wall Street thinks about 12,421 stocks in four baskets. The key is the attitude: analysts are a layer, not a command. They have a bullish bias, lag, target prices miss. Big upside is often a trap. You extract value by tracking changes in rating, addressing contrarian with your own thesis, and letting the analyst layer fit alongside other pillars through ATS and Screener.
