How to Identify Market Phases on QMA and Trade Safely in Each

This is an article every beginner should read before buying their first stock — yet it's rarely mentioned. It will teach you one thing that separates those who earn consistently from those who give up after a few months: the market has phases, and each phase requires a different trading approach.

★ Key Insight: The same stock, the same purchase, different outcome — depending on the market phase when you made it. Aggressively buying a momentum stock in a bull market can be great. Doing exactly the same in a bear market often leads to losses. It's not about having "better stocks." It's about aligning your style with the phase.

---

1. Why the Phase Matters More Than the Individual Stock

There's an old saying: "a rising tide lifts all boats." In a strong bull market, even average companies rise. In a bear market, even great companies fall. Studies show that a significant part of an individual stock's movement is determined by the overall market direction, not just the company itself.

For you, this means: before deciding which stock to buy, determine what phase the market is in. It's the first question, not the last.

---

2. The Four Market Phases

QMA distinguishes four regimes (phases), which you'll see as a color-coded Regime badge on the Dashboard and in the Screener:

PhaseWhat It MeansMood
🟢 BULLMarket is rising, moving averages are trending upward, low volatilityOptimism, "risk-on"
🟡 SIDEWAYSMarket is oscillating within a range, no clear directionIndecision, waiting
🔴 BEARMarket is falling, averages are trending downwardFear, "risk-off"
🟠 VOLATILELarge swings up and down, nervousnessChaos, high risk
---

3. How to IDENTIFY the Phase Directly on QMA (4 Tools)

You don't have to guess or use a ruler on charts. QMA measures the phase automatically:

a) Regime Badge (Main Indicator)

On the Dashboard and in the Screener, there's a color-coded phase badge. QMA calculates it from moving averages of the SPY index (S&P 500) — comparing the 20-day and 50-day averages — and from market volatility over the last 20 days:
  • Short average above long and rising → BULL.
  • Short average below long and falling → BEAR.
  • Averages intertwined, no direction → SIDEWAYS.
  • High volatility → VOLATILE.
★ Insight: A moving average is just a "sliding memory of price." When today's price is above the average of recent weeks, the market has strength. When below, it weakens. Brilliantly simple and surprisingly reliable.

b) QMA Fear & Greed Index

The fear and greed gauge (0 = extreme fear, 100 = extreme greed) consists of 7 components: volatility (VIX), market breadth, dark pool, insider activity, news, institutions, and momentum. Extreme fear often accompanies bear market bottoms; extreme greed accompanies peaks. It helps you avoid following the crowd.

c) Sector Strength Heatmap

Which sectors are leading? In a defensive phase, stable sectors (utilities, consumer goods, healthcare) are often strong. When cyclical and tech sectors lead, the mood is "risk-on." Sector rotation is the market's pulse.

d) Market Strip (SPY/VIX)

At the top of the Dashboard, you see SPY and VIX live. Rising VIX = rising fear. Falling SPY below moving averages = weakening trend.
★ No tool is a crystal ball. The phase is reliably identified only with a few days' delay and can change quickly. That's why you look at multiple indicators simultaneously — when Regime, Fear & Greed, and sectors point in the same direction, you have a stronger picture.

---

4. How to Trade in Each Phase (Educational Perspective)

The following is a general educational overview of styles, not a directive for specific trades. Always verify your own situation and risk tolerance.

🟢 Bull Market (BULL)

The trend is your friend. Historically, the following work in this phase:
  • Trend and momentum approaches — hold rising winners as long as the trend lasts.
  • Breakouts — stocks breaking to new highs with volume.
  • Fuller investment — a higher stock allocation makes sense as long as the phase holds.
  • On QMA: strategies like CANSLIM, Volume Breakout, high MOMENTUM score.
Risk: even in a bull market, corrections occur. Don't fall in love with a stock and have an exit plan.

🟡 Sideways Market (SIDEWAYS)

No clear trend — breakouts often "fail" (false signals). Historically, the following work better:
  • Focus on quality and value — strong companies with good fundamentals.
  • Dividend stocks — they pay you even when the price is stagnant.
  • Smaller positions, more patience — don't force trades where there's no direction.
  • On QMA: high VALUE score, dividend section, quality grades A.
Risk: boredom tempts overtrading. Sometimes the best trade is no trade.

🔴 Bear Market (BEAR)

Priority number one is capital protection — don't lose. Historically, consider:
  • Defensive sectors (utilities, consumer staples, healthcare).
  • Higher cash allocation — cash is a position, providing peace and the ability to buy cheaply later.
  • Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA) — regular smaller purchases of quality companies spread timing risk.
  • No leverage. Leverage in a bear market destroys accounts the fastest.
  • On QMA: defensive sectors in the heatmap, quality, smaller position sizes.
★ What no one tells you: The greatest fortunes are often built in bear markets — not by getting rich then, but by accumulating quality cheaply, which will grow in the next bull cycle. But only if you survived the bear with capital. Survival > heroics.

🟠 Volatile Market (VOLATILE)

Large swings in both directions. General guidelines:
  • Smaller positions — swings can easily knock you out of the game.
  • Wider stop space — tight stops in the wild unnecessarily "shake you out."
  • Fewer trades, more deliberation.
---

5. Universal Safety Rules (Apply in ALL Phases)

These rules protect you no matter what the market does:

  1. Position size is king. Never so much that a single trade can wipe you out. Many pros risk only a small percentage of their account on one trade.
  2. Diversify. More independent positions, not all-in on one.
  3. Have an exit plan before you enter — where you take profit, where you accept a loss.
  4. Use Stop alert (QMA will notify you) — but you control the exit.
  5. Leverage only when you can bear the loss — and preferably not at all in bear/volatile markets.
  6. Monitor the phase regularly, not just once. Phases change.
---

6. How QMA Specifically Helps You in Each Phase

  • Identifies the phase for you — Regime badge, Fear & Greed, sector strength all in one place.
  • Adjusts ratings — QMA model subtly adjusts pillar weights according to the regime (e.g., different emphasis in defensive phases than in risk phases). Scores thus reflect context.
  • Offers strategies tailored to style — momentum/breakout for bull, quality/dividends for sideways, defense for bear.
  • Monitors portfolio risk — warnings and drawdown estimates in the Portfolio section.
---

Summary (Bottom Line)

Before choosing a stock, determine the market phase — QMA will tell you with the Regime badge, Fear & Greed, and sector strength. In a bull phase, trend and momentum historically prevail, in a sideways market quality and dividends, in a bear market capital protection and cash, in a volatile market smaller positions and deliberation. And across all, one most important rule applies: survive — because those who stay in the game will see the next bull market.
