How to Identify Market Phases on QMA and Trade Safely in Each
This is an article every beginner should read before buying their first stock — yet it's rarely mentioned. It will teach you one thing that separates those who earn consistently from those who give up after a few months: the market has phases, and each phase requires a different trading approach.
★ Key Insight: The same stock, the same purchase, different outcome — depending on the market phase when you made it. Aggressively buying a momentum stock in a bull market can be great. Doing exactly the same in a bear market often leads to losses. It's not about having "better stocks." It's about aligning your style with the phase.
---
1. Why the Phase Matters More Than the Individual Stock
There's an old saying: "a rising tide lifts all boats." In a strong bull market, even average companies rise. In a bear market, even great companies fall. Studies show that a significant part of an individual stock's movement is determined by the overall market direction, not just the company itself.
For you, this means: before deciding which stock to buy, determine what phase the market is in. It's the first question, not the last.

2. The Four Market Phases
QMA distinguishes four regimes (phases), which you'll see as a color-coded Regime badge on the Dashboard and in the Screener:
| Phase | What It Means | Mood |
|---|---|---|
| 🟢 BULL | Market is rising, moving averages are trending upward, low volatility | Optimism, "risk-on" |
| 🟡 SIDEWAYS | Market is oscillating within a range, no clear direction | Indecision, waiting |
| 🔴 BEAR | Market is falling, averages are trending downward | Fear, "risk-off" |
| 🟠 VOLATILE | Large swings up and down, nervousness | Chaos, high risk |
3. How to IDENTIFY the Phase Directly on QMA (4 Tools)
You don't have to guess or use a ruler on charts. QMA measures the phase automatically:
a) Regime Badge (Main Indicator)
On the Dashboard and in the Screener, there's a color-coded phase badge. QMA calculates it from moving averages of the SPY index (S&P 500) — comparing the 20-day and 50-day averages — and from market volatility over the last 20 days:- Short average above long and rising → BULL.
- Short average below long and falling → BEAR.
- Averages intertwined, no direction → SIDEWAYS.
- High volatility → VOLATILE.
