🔁Repeat Options Flow: Repetition Reveals Institutions

2026-06-20 · 239 views

In a Nutshell

Repeat Options Flow (/options-flow) separates noise from signal in options flow. One big $2M options trade is often just a hedge — noise. But the same strike bought across multiple days for large total premium looks like institutional position-building. QMA ranks by (distinct active days × total premium) and badges recurring positions as "active 3+ days."

🔰 In Plain Terms

Imagine spotting a luxury car in a parking lot once. Coincidence. But if you see it there five days in a row in the same spot, you start to suspect someone drives there regularly — with intent.

Options work similarly. One huge trade could be a coincidence or a hedge (an institution "insuring" another position). But when someone buys the same bet (same price, same direction) day after day, it's like that car in the lot: repetition reveals intent, not chance.

QMA hunts for these repeated patterns and describes them — who positioned repeatedly and where. It doesn't tell you "buy this." It shows you where repetition is strongest.

How It Works

Why one trade = noise. Market makers and funds also place large options trades to hedge. A single ticket — even worth millions — doesn't necessarily mean a directional bet. It's often just one leg of a more complex strategy.

Why repetition = signal. When the same strike and the same type (call/put) appears repeatedly across multiple days and sums to a large premium, it's unlikely to be just a hedge. It looks more like gradual position-building — someone accumulating exposure in batches to avoid moving the price.

How QMA ranks. The leaderboard at /options-flow ranks positions by a score:

number of distinct active days × total premium

This floats up positions that are persistent (many days) and large (high premium) at the same time — exactly the profile of institutional accumulation.

The "active 3+ days" badge. A position that recurs across at least three different days gets this badge. It's a quick visual filter for "this isn't a one-off."

Calls vs. puts. QMA distinguishes direction: repeated calls describe persistent bullish exposure, repeated puts persistent bearish/hedging exposure. It's always a description of positioning, never an instruction.

🎯 For Advanced Users

  • Premium > contract count. Summing premium weights the bet in dollars, not ticket count. A thousand cheap OTM contracts ≠ a few expensive ATM contracts.
  • Persistence filters hedges. A hedge is usually set once. A position spread across many days resembles active accumulation more than a static hedge.
  • Strike clustering. When repetition concentrates around one strike (not scattered), the signal is cleaner — it shows a specific price thesis.
  • Cross-check with smart money. Put repeated options flow in context with the stock's smart-money score. Convergence (options + dark pool + insider) is more informative than an isolated options signal.

How to Use It in QMA

  1. Open /options-flow.
  2. The leaderboard is sorted by persistence × premium — the most persistent large positions are at the top.
  3. Look for the "active 3+ days" badge = the position recurs, it's not a one-off trade.
  4. Note the direction (call/put) and strike.
  5. For a given ticker, open /stocks/[symbol] and cross-check the options flow with the smart-money score.

💡 What This Means for You

Most retail "unusual options" tools throw individual big trades at you — and you end up chasing noise. Repeat Options Flow flips the logic: it shows where institutions positioned repeatedly, because repetition is hard to fake. It's a filter for patience, not for the thrill of one big ticket.

FAQ

Does a repeated call mean the stock will rise?
No. It describes someone else's persistent bullish exposure. QMA doesn't forecast price or give instructions.

Why isn't a single $2M trade at the top of the leaderboard?
Because the score multiplies premium by the number of active days. A one-day trade has a low multiplier — it ranks below a persistent position.

Can repeated puts be a hedge?
Yes, they can. That's why it's a description of positioning, not a directional bet — always cross-check with other signals.
