Stop-loss, position sizing, diversification, rebalancing and correlation — not losing matters more than winning.
Risk & portfolio management — overview
Risk management is the discipline that decides long-term survival in the market more than stock picking does. The math is harsh: after a 50% loss you need a 100% gain just to get back to zero. That is why seasoned investors say not losing matters more than winning. The core tools are the stop-loss (a preset loss limit), position sizing (position size proportional to risk) and diversification (spreading across uncorrelated assets). Position sizing is an underrated but key tool: each position's size should follow how much you are willing to lose on the trade, not how much you like the idea. Diversification then reduces risk by spreading capital across assets that do not move alike — when one falls, another may hold. Correlation is the key concept here: two "different" stocks from the same sector can fall together. Rebalancing keeps a portfolio at target weights and forces you to sell the expensive and add the cheap. QMA supports risk management with tools like stop alerts (which only inform, they do not sell automatically), correlation analysis and portfolio stress tests. The goal is not to remove risk — that is impossible — but to make it conscious and managed. This section describes the individual tools and principles.
