BGC: Smart Money Strengthens, but QMA Score Remains Lukewarm
At first glance, it looks like a stock that big players are starting to take an interest in again: the smart-money WHS score is 69, institutional flow IFS is 65, and public quarterly reports show more increased positions than decreased ones. Yet, the overall QMA score for BGC Group is only 57.2, a B+ grade without strong conviction.
This is the main tension with BGC: part of the market sees an improving story according to the data, but the overall model is still held back by a combination of valuation, debt, insider score, and uneven cash flow. BGC is not a story of a simple cheap stock. It's more of a test to see if operational improvements can translate into the quality that institutions seem to be starting to recognize.
Thesis
BGC Group, Inc. operates in the Financial Services sector, specifically in the capital markets area. The company's market capitalization is $4.46 billion, so it's not a micro-cap story, but neither is it a giant financial institution where fundamental changes get lost in a massive balance sheet.
The analytical thesis is based on the contradiction between two layers of data. The first layer is positive: revenues in the last reported period Q2 2026 reached $865.5 million, growing 12.6% year-over-year, free cash flow was $145.6 million, and the Piotroski F-Score is 8 out of 9. This usually indicates decent operational health.
The second layer is more cautious: the overall QMA score of 57.2 is not low, but it's not convincingly high either. A P/E of 61.5 suggests that the market is paying a high multiple of reported earnings. Debt/Equity of 1.6 indicates visible financial leverage, and an Altman Z-Score of 2.15 is not a signal of a carefree balance sheet. The model deviation from fair value is -20.4%, which in QMA methodology means the model does not see the stock as undervalued relative to its fair value.
The contrarian angle is clear: institutions and smart-money signals look stronger than the overall quantitative picture. The question is not whether BGC "looks good" or "bad." The question is which layer of data will prove more important: growing operational performance and institutional interest, or valuation and risk brakes.
What the Numbers Say
Let's start with revenues. In Q2 2026, the company reported $865.5 million, representing a 12.6% year-over-year growth. For beginners, it's important to distinguish between revenue growth and profit growth: revenues tell how much the company earned, but they don't say how much of that remained for shareholders. However, with BGC, it's interesting that revenue growth is accompanied by solid margins.
A gross margin of 90.6% is very high. In practice, this means that after direct costs of provided services, a large portion of revenues remains to cover operating expenses, technology, people, interest, and taxes. An operating margin of 14.4% shows a more realistic picture: after regular operating expenses, about fourteen dollars of operating result remains from every hundred dollars of revenue. A net margin of 8.4% indicates what remains after all expenses and taxes.
Net income for Q2 2026 was $72.5 million. Operating cash flow was $158.6 million, and free cash flow was $145.6 million. This is significant because free cash flow shows the cash that remains for the company after investments needed to maintain and develop the business. Accounting profit can be affected by non-cash items, but cash flow is closer to what the company actually generates.
The trend over periods is uneven. Revenues grew from $544.2 million in Q3 2024 to $865.5 million in Q2 2026, reaching $955.5 million in Q1 2026 in between. This shows a significantly higher scale of business than in earlier quarters, but also fluctuations. Free cash flow was very strong in Q4 2024 at $234.6 million, negative -$14.7 million in Q1 2025, again $141.1 million in Q4 2025, negative -$26.3 million in Q1 2026, and positive $145.6 million in Q2 2026. Here you can see why the overall score is not euphoric: quality exists, but it is not perfectly smooth.
Valuation creates the second pole of the story. A P/E of 61.5 is a high multiple of price to earnings. For a financial company, this means that the market values the stock significantly above the current level of earnings, or expects an improvement in future results. A P/S of 5.15 indicates that the company's price corresponds to more than five times its revenues. An FCF yield of 3.3% means that free cash flow relative to market capitalization is not extremely high. In other words: BGC generates cash, but the market does not pay a low price for it.
A positive aspect is the trend in the number of shares: the company reports buybacks, i.e., a decreasing number of shares. If the number of shares is lower, the same volume of profit or cash flow is divided among fewer shares. This can support per-share indicators if the business is also stable.
The price in the latest data hovered around $11.45. Over approximately 30 days, it was down 5.5%, up 7.1% over approximately 90 days, and 9.5% away from the 52-week high. The annual range of closing prices was $8.31 to $12.65. Technically, it is not a stock at the bottom of the range, but neither is it a title stuck at the maximum.
Bullish Scenario
The optimistic interpretation starts with operational strength. Revenues in Q2 2026 are significantly above 2024 levels, and a 12.6% year-over-year growth shows that the company is not standing still. A net margin of 8.4% is close to Q1 2026, when it reached 8.8%, and is significantly higher than weaker quarters like Q4 2025 with a net margin of 1.8%.
A strong argument is cash flow. Q2 2026 brought free cash flow of $145.6 million, in addition to operating cash flow of $158.6 million. If the company could maintain a similar ability to convert results into cash in future periods, the market might perceive high multiples as less problematic.
A Piotroski F-Score of 8 out of 9 is another bullish point. This indicator tracks a set of accounting and operational signals, such as profitability, cash flow, debt, and efficiency. A score of 8 is among the stronger values and supports the argument that current results are not just cosmetic.
Smart money also fits into the bullish scenario. WHS 69 and IFS 65 suggest that big money is not indifferent to the title. Public quarterly reports for the quarter ending 2026-06-30, published with a delay of about 45 days, show 365 reported institutions, a change of +1, 56 new positions, and 53 closed. The difference between increased and decreased positions is even more pronounced: 209 increased versus 85 decreased. This does not automatically mean the right direction, but it shows that institutional flow is not weak.
Third parties are also positively tuned, although the sample is small. The company is covered by 2 analysts, and the summary rating of third parties is marked as Buy, with a distribution of 0 strong buy, 2 buy, 0 hold, 0 sell, and 0 strong sell. Due to the low number of analysts, however, the average target does not have sufficient support and is not suitable for making a strong conclusion.
Bearish Scenario
The pessimistic interpretation begins with valuation. A P/E of 61.5 for a company with a net margin of 8.4% means that the market is already pricing in a significant portion of future improvement. If revenue growth slows or margins return to lower quarters, the multiple could seem strained.
A model deviation from fair value of -20.4% is another warning. In QMA methodology, a positive deviation means room to move up; a negative one suggests that the model does not see the stock as cheap relative to fair value. This is why, even with solid individual scores, the Composite remains only 57.2.
Uneven cash flow is the second problem. In the last eight quarters tracked, there were two quarters with negative FCF: Q1 2025 with -$14.7 million and Q1 2026 with -$26.3 million. On the other hand, there were very strong quarters, such as Q4 2024 with $234.6 million. Such a profile may indicate seasonality or working capital, but for investment models, it is less comfortable than a consistently positive series.
Debt is also not negligible. Debt/Equity of 1.6 shows that the company uses financial leverage. An Altman Z-Score of 2.15 does not act as an extreme alarm, but neither as a very strong signal of safety. For a financially oriented company, it is necessary to monitor whether profit growth does not come at the cost of higher balance sheet sensitivity.
A weak point is insider activity. IAS is only 15.8, significantly below other main scores. This alone does not say that something negative is happening inside the company, but in contrast with WHS 69, it raises the question: why does the institutional signal look better than the insider layer?
What to Watch
The first metric is revenues. Q2 2026 brought $865.5 million, and Q1 2026 was at $955.5 million. It is practical to watch whether subsequent quarters stay close to these higher levels or return closer to older values like $722.8 million in Q3 2025 or $823.1 million in Q4 2025.
The second metric is net margin. The current 8.4% is a strong value compared to Q4 2025 at 1.8% and Q3 2025 at 3.9%. If the net margin remains near the Q2 2026 level, it would support the bullish scenario. If it returns to lower quarters, the high P/E of 61.5 would be harder to justify.
The third is free cash flow. After -$26.3 million in Q1 2026, Q2 2026 came with $145.6 million. It will be useful to watch whether the negative first quarters were just a recurring seasonal phenomenon or whether cash flow volatility becomes a bigger problem.
The fourth area is institutional reports. The latest known data for the quarter ending 2026-06-30 showed 365 institutions, 56 new positions, 53 closed, 209 increased, and 85 decreased. Since these reports come with a delay of about 45 days, they are not an immediate market snapshot. However, it will be important to watch whether the predominance of increased positions over decreased ones persists.
The fifth point is the relationship of the price to the annual range. The last price of $11.45 is 9.5% below the 52-week high, and the annual range of closing prices is $8.31 to $12.65. If the price stays high in the range while the model fair deviation remains negative, the tension between market optimism and the model increases.
Risks
The biggest risk is valuation. BGC may be of higher quality than the past suggested, but a P/E of 61.5 and a P/S of 5.15 leave less room for disappointment. For a stock where the model deviation from fair value is -20.4%, valuation itself is a key theme.
The second risk is cyclicality and volatility of results. BGC operates in the capital markets area, where client activity and market environment can quickly change volumes. The history of quarters shows fluctuations in net margin and FCF, so one strong quarter does not automatically define a long-term trend.
The third risk is the balance sheet. Debt/Equity of 1.6 and an Altman Z-Score of 2.15 suggest that financial health is not without questions. A company with leverage can increase returns in a good environment, but in a worse period, leverage becomes a sensitive spot.
The fourth risk is limited analyst coverage. The summary rating of third parties is Buy, but it stands on only 2 analytical voices. Such a sample can be informationally useful but is not robust.
The fifth risk is the insider signal. IAS 15.8 is a weak element in the scoring picture. In combination with a stronger institutional flow, it creates a difference between how publicly reported institutional movements look and what the insider layer captures.
How the QMA Score Sees It
QMA Composite 57.2 with a B+ grade says: the data is above average but not unequivocally strong. The value pillar FVS 73 looks decent, yet it is held back by a model deviation of -20.4%. Momentum TSS 65 and relative strength RS 65 show a solid, not extreme technical picture. Earnings quality EQS 68 aligns with a Piotroski F-Score of 8 and strong FCF in Q2 2026, but cash flow volatility prevents a clearer conclusion.
News sentiment NSS 64 is slightly positive, and catalysts/earnings XS 85 are among the strongest points of the entire profile. The smart-money layer is the core of the story: WHS 69 and IFS 65 support the image of interest from big players, additionally with a publicly reported predominance of increased positions over decreased ones. Against this stands weak IAS 15.8, higher valuation, and balance sheet questions.
The result is a stock where the data does not tell a simple fairy tale. BGC has operational improvements, cash generation, and institutional interest. At the same time, it has valuation and risk signals that explain why the overall score remains more lukewarm than the smart-money layer.
