🚀QMA वॉल्यूम ब्रेकआउट — 20-दिन के उच्च स्तर से ऊपर वॉल्यूम पर +4 % का दिन

QMA Volume Breakout — +4 % Day on Volume Above the 20-Day High
One of the simplest momentum filters has three conditions: the stock makes +4 % or more, volume is above average, and the close is above the 20-day high. That's it. This concept is known as the 4 % momentum breakout framework.
This article explains why such a simple filter can make sense — as an educational review of a methodology, not a current signal or an instruction to trade.
Why three conditions are enough
Each condition filters something specific:
- +4 % day = something actually happened. Random noise is roughly ±1.5 %.
- Above-average volume = institutions see the move too, not just a thin market.
- Close above the 20-day high = breakout, not a pullback rally.
How the methodology behaved in a historical backtest (illustrative)
The numbers below come from one past test window (Stockbee-style 4% breakout + MEDIUM quality filter, 12 months, n=6). They are illustrative and historical:
- Headline alpha vs SPY: +21.9 percentage points
- Win rate: 83 % (5 of 6 trades profitable)
- Profit Factor was extremely high — which at n=6 signals overfitting rather than real edge
In the test this was a short-term approach: entry shortly after the signal formed, a protective level relatively close (short hold = tight stop), and gradual profit-taking with the protective level moved to break-even after the first realisation. Typical holding time was on the order of days to two weeks.
The biggest weakness: slippage
Precisely because it is a short hold, slippage — the gap between the model price and the real fill — matters a lot. On fast entries/exits it can eat much of the modelled edge. Educational takeaway: the shorter the trade, the more fees, slippage and (short-term) tax drag matter.
Who the concept is relevant for
- An active trader who can react quickly and uses a low-fee broker
- Someone who understands that high frequency means smaller individual positions and sensitivity to costs
Risks of short-term trading
- Slippage on entry — a morning gap can shift the real entry.
- Earnings day — results can reverse the move overnight.
- Whipsaw — a fast reversal takes out a tight stop.
- Sector burst — the whole sector moves; a single name's "edge" is illusory.
- News fade — positive news wears off and profit-taking follows.
